Sambu Panama 09

Sambu is a friendly little town on the banks of the Rio Sambu in the Darien Province of Panama. It is here that Michael Harrington, the only gringo in town, has a place called the Sambuhause where you can stay and he knows all the right guides to help you explore the Darien. Sambu is more of a small town with a few government built buildings, a medical clinic, a church, a small runway mixed with traditional Embera houses on stilts. Across the bridge is the Embera village of Puerto Indio. Here approximately 250 people live in the traditional houses and it is here that you must see the Embera elders to get permission to travel into the Embera Comarca.

I have made some good friends here in Sambu and they have shown me the best of times. Several of these guys I have absolutely trusted my life with and I’m still here. The Darien is full of such gracious and knowledgeable people.
